Friends of Sears Island will be hosting a nature walk titled “Medicinal Plants: Family Care and Clinical Applications” on Thursday, September 1st from 10am-12pm. The program will be led by Steve Byers, a practicing herbalist trained in Western Herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine. On this walk we will discuss the incredible variety of medicinal trees, shrubs, and plants on Sears island including native and invasive species. Plant conservation and sustainable harvest as well as dosage, time of harvest, and proper identification will be discussed.

Geology Walk with Ryan Gordon
The earth history of coastal Maine will be on display during a geology walk offered by Friends of Sears Island on Thursday, August 25th from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Ryan Gordon, a geologist with the Maine Geological Survey, will be presenting a walk titled “The Geology of Sears Island: From Rock and Clay to Pockmarks in Belfast Bay.” Ryan will lead participants on a walk to investigate glacial erratics, moraines, metamorphosed bedrock, and discuss what lies below the waves just offshore. FOSI to Host “Photographing Insects and Flowers” Program
Join Friends of Sears Island on Saturday, August 13th from 10am-12pm for “Photographing Insects and Flowers” Learn the basics of photographing insects and flowers with Roger Rittmaster, a Maine Master Naturalist and the author of “Butterflies Up Close: A Guide to Butterfly Photography.” Roger will teach program participants how to identify insects and demonstrate how to use your iPhone, an SLR, or a point and shoot camera in nature photography. A retired endocrinologist, Roger has a lifelong interest in natural history and nature photography, and over the past 15 years has focused on photographing insects.
