SUMMARY:Cabin Fever Reliever: Community Crafting Event
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 15\, from 1:30-3:30 pm Friends of Sears Island will host an all ages community crafting program. Here’s a great chance to get out of the house and have a change of scenery while gathering with others to create a variety of fun projects! The program will be held at Mermaid Plaza at 1 East Main Street in Searsport. Friends of Sears Island will have several crafting stations set up\, where participants can make decoupaged shell trinket dishes\, springy cherry blossom and forsythia branch decorations\, a mini toadstool and moss craft\, felted friendship bracelets\, button trees\, and decorate rocks for your garden. Participants will have approximately 20 minutes at each station\, allowing the option to make all the projects if desired. Spend the afternoon visiting with friends and neighbors and create some cheery items to brighten your home while we wait for spring! \nThis program is for all ages\, young and old and in between\, but children must attend with an accompanying adult. To help defray materials costs\, we are suggesting a $5 donation per person\, or $10 per family. If you plan to attend\, please RSVP to outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org so that we can anticipate the quantity of materials we will need to have on hand. This also allows us to be in touch with you to remind you of the event and to share updates. Participants should wear old clothes or bring an apron or painting smock.

SUMMARY:All are invited to our Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Sears Island board of directors and advisory group—and your friends and neighbors—as we look back at the highlights of 2025 and learn about plans for the coming years. This is your chance to ask questions and get answers. It’s also an opportunity for you to think about becoming more involved. We have many important tasks for volunteers who can give a little time or a lot. \nPassing the Torch: At this meeting\, we will also bid a very grateful farewell to longtime board president Susan White. Susan has been on FOSI’s leadership team for 15 years\, including 12 as president. She’s decided it’s time for her to pull back and really retire. Susan’s contributions over so many years can’t be easily listed\, and her wise\, intelligent\, and patient leadership will be missed by all who’ve had the good fortune to work with her. There will be a chance for anyone to share memories! \nWe will gather next Saturday\, January 10\, at 12:30 pm at Mermaid Plaza\, located at 1 East Main St. in Searsport—it’s the building with the bright blue roof! We’d love to see you there! \nPS – We are expecting excellent weather\, but it is winter and this is Maine. If it becomes necessary to postpone due to weather\, we will plan to gather the following Saturday\, January 17th\, same time and place. We’ll send out an email and post on our Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Sears Island Fungal Project: The Importance of Collection and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island invites you to attend a Zoom presentation titled “Sears Island Fungal Project: The Importance of Collection and Conservation\,” on Thursday\, November 6\, at 6:30 pm. Fungi are shockingly understudied – while an estimated 80-90% of all plant species have been described by science\, of the estimated 2- 4 million fungal species\, only about 5% have been named formally. Join mycologist Jula Moll-Rocek for a discussion of the importance of fungal conservation and collections and an overview of the fungi that they collected (along with collaborators Jae Echeverria and Pete Avis PhD) during the summer and fall of 2024 on Sears Island. \nJula Moll-Rocek has a BA in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University (’12)\, and has experience working in the fields of nature conservation and restoration in areas of Latin America and East Africa. Most recently they were working as a curatorial assistant at the Farlow Herbarium of Cryptogamic Botany at Harvard University in Prof. Don Pfister’s lab. They love to learn and teach about fungi\, and are currently organizing a Community Mycology Collective in the Boston area. \nTo register and receive a link to this free Zoom presentation\, email outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org.

SUMMARY:Self-guided Interpretive Walk: Tracking Mammal Activity in Winter
DESCRIPTION:From March 15th-31st\, interpretive panels will temporarily be on display along the Homestead Trail.  As you walk along the trail\, you’ll see 20 different signs about learning to distinguish mammal tracks in late winter and early spring — which can be in snow\, mud\, or sand!  Information about other signs of mammal activity is included as well.  The interpretive trail begins at the kiosk just beyond the island gate\, and extends along the Homestead Trail to the field next to the old homestead foundation\, covering approximately half a mile.  This time of year the trail may be snowy\, icy\, or wet and muddy\, so please remember appropriate footwear and take it easy as you leave your own tracks along the trail! \nThe majority of the text and many of the photos used in this self-guided interpretive nature walk were borrowed from a slideshow presentation Sandra Mitchell gave for FOSI several years ago about learning to read animal tracks.  While we have supplemented some information and stock photography\, we deeply appreciate Sandra giving us permission to recycle her material and sharing her knowledge and photos with us!  Sandra Mitchell is a naturalist and nature photographer who has led many programs for FOSI over the years.  To learn more about her and see her work\, visit https://sandra-mitchell.com/.

SUMMARY:“Wee Forest Folk” Program & Summer Activity Kits
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island will offer a free “Wee Forest Folk” family program on Sears Island on Wednesday\, July 31\, from 2:00pm – 3:30pm\, led by FOSI’s Outreach Coordinator\, Ashley Megquier. She will lead children on a scavenger hunt to find small gnome and fairy figurines\, which they will then use to build fairy houses and gnome homes out of natural materials in the woods. There will be ample opportunity for kids to use their imaginations and explore nature as they create a tiny habitat for their figurine. Several gnome and fairy themed stories will also be shared during the program\, and if time allows\, children will be able to build small rafts for their gnome or fairy to see if they can float in the ocean. Families attending this event will be given one of FOSI’s summer activity kits\, with materials that can be used during the program. In addition to a small figurine\, the kits will include a “field guide to gnomes and fairies” with inspiration for crafting their houses\, plus materials and instructions to make a small floating raft and a fairy door. A handout with prompts for sketching and writing about their figure will also be included to inspire the imagining of a magical world for the wee forest folk. \nThis program and the activity kits are free and intended for children ages 5-12 with an accompanying adult. Donations to Friends of Sears Island are always greatly appreciated to allow the organization to continue to offer programming to all at no cost. For more information and to register for the program and/or a summer activity kit\, email outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org. Preference for kits will be given to those that are attending the program\, but we will have some extra available for those that cannot join us on July 31st\, which will be available for pick-up at Carver Memorial Library in Searsport from July 31-August 16. Registration is complete upon receiving a confirmation email. Due to limited program space and activity kit availability\, we cannot accommodate requests for multiple kits from summer school and camp groups\, but we are always happy to email digital versions of our handouts or activity sheets. \nFriends of Sears Island’s children’s programs and activity kits are sponsored by First National Bank. \nPhoto: A gnome home built in the woods\, by Ashley Megquier

SUMMARY:"The Keeper of Wild Words" StoryWalk ®
DESCRIPTION:Carver Memorial Library and Friends of Sears Island are collaborating on a summer StoryWalk® for children to enjoy along the Homestead Trail on Sears Island. As families walk along the woods path\, they will find posts with laminated pages of the book The Keeper of Wild Words\, written by Brooke Smith and illustrated by Madeline Kloepper. This beautiful book is written to appeal to kids ages 5-9\, but will be enjoyed by all ages. The author found inspiration for this story when she read that over 100 natural words had been removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary\, because they weren’t considered relevant to today’s youth. In this story\, a grandmother takes her granddaughter on a walk to find some of these wild words out in nature\, to deepen an appreciation for the environment\, and to teach her that we can keep special things alive by speaking their names and remembering them. After reading this story\, we hope families will look for their own “wild words” as they walk back through the woods to the parking lot! \nThe StoryWalk® will be available from July 1 – 31\, and directions to the start of the story can be found by the kiosk just beyond the island gate. From start to finish\, the story will cover approximately a half mile of the trail. Sears Island is located off Route 1 on Sears Island Road\, just east of downtown Searsport. For more information on the Carver Memorial Library\, visit www.carverlibrary.org. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier\, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. \nPhoto:  The Keeper of Wild Words by Brook Smith\, courtesy of Carver Memorial Library
