SUMMARY:Mammals and More on the Move in March
DESCRIPTION:Photo: A fisher in a tree\, by Kirk Gentalen \nFriends of Sears Island\, the Belfast Free Library\, and Maine Coast Heritage Trust invite you to a presentation about wildlife activity in this area of the mid-coast in March\, to be held on Thursday\, March 14\, from 6:30-7:30 pm in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library. There will also be a Zoom-in option for this program for those who aren’t able to attend in person. \nAround these parts\, March is a wonderful month full of transitions (is there a month that isn’t full of transitions?). When it comes to animal activity in mid-coast Maine in March\, there’s lots going on\, and more to come as we move toward spring. Join Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Land Steward and Nature Observer\, Kirk Gentalen\, for a lively and insightful presentation about where things are at (presently) wildlife-wise and what Kirk’s looking forward to crossing paths with soon enough. Through stories and slides\, both loaded with tips and laden with information\, we’ll get ourselves ready for spring\, which will be only days away. \nKirk Gentalen is a regional stewardship manager for the Maine Coast Heritage Trust for mid-coast Maine (mcht.org) and has 30 years of environmental education experience from working all over the country. Currently living on the St George peninsula with his family\, Amy and Leif\, Gentalen writes a nature column (‘Nature Bummin’) for MCHT (mcht.org/story-tag/nature-bummin) and edits the Vinalhaven Sightings Report (vinalhavensightings.blogspot.com). \nIf you plan to join this program by Zoom\, please register in advance at http://tinyurl.com/yzenuz9u. No need to register if attending in person.

SUMMARY:All-Ages Community Crafting Event
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 12\, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm\, Friends of Sears Island will host an all-ages community crafting program. The program will be held at the Searsport Community Building at 42 Prospect Street in Searsport. Friends of Sears Island will have several crafting stations set up\, where participants can make a paper lantern\, a thankful tree with gold acorns\, place cards for the Thanksgiving table\, and felted friendship bracelets. A snack of cider\, pumpkin bread\, and apples will be available as well. Spend the afternoon visiting with friends and neighbors and create some lovely items that can adorn your Thanksgiving table\, or be given as gifts as we enter the holiday season! \nThis free program is for all ages\, young and old and in between\, but children must attend with an accompanying adult. While registration is not required and drop-ins are welcome\, an RSVP to outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org is much appreciated so that we can anticipate how many snacks and materials we will need to have on hand. This also allows us to be in touch with you to remind you of the event and to share updates. Participants should wear clothes they don’t mind getting paint and glue on\, and can bring some ferns\, leaves\, pressed flowers or anything they’d like to incorporate into their paper lantern. \nFor more information\, visit friendsofsearsisland.org or facebook.com/friendsofsearsisland. \nPhoto by Ashley Megquier: A paper lantern and some golden acorns\, two of the crafts participants will be making at the crafting program.

SUMMARY:A wind port for Searsport?
DESCRIPTION:Maine needs a new 100-acre port where enormous floating wind turbines can be built\, launched\, and towed to a new wind farm proposed for the Gulf of Maine\, as part of the State’s plan to develop new sources of renewable energy. SUMMARY:Forest Therapy/Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island invites you to join us for a forest therapy walk on Sears Island on Saturday\, April 8\, from 9:45 am – noon\, led by Joanne Moesswilde. Immerse yourself in nature through the practice of forest therapy\, also known as forest bathing. This is not a psychology session\, nor is it a time when you need your swimsuit. Forest therapy is a practice that supports health and wellness through guided immersion in the forest to promote well-being of both the land and people. In this guided outdoor experience\, invitations are offered that invite us to slow down and notice the natural world all around us\, enhancing our relationship with the more-than-human-world and ourselves. \nRegistration for this program is required\, as space is limited. To sign up\, email outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org. \nUpon receiving a confirmation email\, participants joining us should bring clothing appropriate for the weather: coat\, hat\, gloves\, rain gear\, plus another layer in a small day pack to access as needed. This is to ensure you won’t get cold while we are sitting. Also please pack a water bottle\, and a “crazy creek” style chair or an insulated pad to sit on if you have one. There will be a few pads to share as well. The distance walked will be approximately 1-2 miles\, sometimes on uneven ground. Walking will be slow and interspersed with time sitting on the ground. \nJoanne Moesswilde\, a Registered Maine Guide and ANFT Forest Therapy Guide\, leads forest therapy and outdoor adventures in the midcoast area. Through forest therapy walks and other outdoor experiences\, Joanne integrates her experience\, love and knowledge of the outdoors to offer participants nature immersion opportunities that nurture our healthful re-connection to the land and ourselves and a time to re-wild the self. To find out more about Joanne’s offerings\, contact her at jmoesswilde@gmail.com or 207-323-9995. \nPhoto credit: Joanne Moesswilde

SUMMARY:What you need to know: The Proposed Wind Port & Protecting Sears Island
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island will hold a free public meeting on Wednesday\, October 12\, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\, in the Abbott Room at Belfast Free Library\, to give an update on the status of the proposal to develop a “wind port” in Searsport. Large floating wind turbines would be constructed and launched from the port for deployment in the Gulf of Maine. At this meeting we will review the process so far and provide analysis of new information that is expected to come during the September 29 meeting of the Offshore Wind Port Advisory Group in Augusta. \nSears Island and Mack Point are identified as feasible locations for this port\, if such a port will be built in Penobscot Bay. If Sears Island is chosen for this development\, it would destroy the island’s ecological\, recreational\, and economic value\, while re-developing Mack Point\, an industrial site for more than a century\, into a renewable energy site offers a “greener” option. \nTo learn more about the state’s plan\, click here for our resource page.

SUMMARY:Rally for Sears Island!
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island\, along with our friends from Islesboro Islands Trust\, Sierra Club Maine\, and others\, will present a rally for Sears Island on Saturday\, October 8\, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, in the parking lot of Mermaid Plaza\, 1 East Main Street in Searsport (the building with the blue roof on the right as you enter town from Belfast). Come learn more about Maine Department of Transportation’s proposal to develop a “Wind Port” in Searsport. They are considering developing Sears Island\, one of the largest undeveloped islands on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S.\, into the hub for building and launching floating offshore wind turbines. This would significantly diminish the island’s ecological\, recreational\, and economic value\, when re-developing Mack Point\, an industrial site for more than a century\, is a feasible and “greener” option in Penobscot Bay. \nIf you love Sears Island\, make a sign\, and show your love! If you have an interest in the future of Sears Island\, come learn more and let your voice be heard! \nFree hamburgers and hot dogs\, starting at noon while they last! \nLive traditional and Celtic music with Searsport’s own Sea Strings Community Orchestra\, from noon until 2:00 p.m.
