SUMMARY:StoryWalk: You Find a Leaf
DESCRIPTION:Carver Memorial Library and Friends of Sears Island are collaborating on a fall StoryWalk® for children to enjoy along the Homestead Trail on Sears Island. As families walk along the woods path\, they will find posts with laminated pages of the book If You Find a Leaf  written and illustrated by Aimée Sicuro. This lovely book is written to appeal to kids ages 3-8\, but will be enjoyed by all. In this story\, the author blends photographs of real leaves with her delightful illustrations\, imagining all the things you might be able to do with leaves of various sizes\, shapes and colors. This story will capture the imagination of all who read it\, and as you hike you can collect your own colorful fall leaves to incorporate into drawings at home! \nThe StoryWalk® will be available from September 10 – October 10\, and directions to the start of the story can be found by the kiosk just beyond the island gate. From start to finish\, the story will cover approximately a half mile of the trail. Sears Island is located off of Route 1 on Sears Island Road\, just east of downtown Searsport. For more information on the Carver Memorial Library\, visit www.carverlibrary.org. \nThe StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier\, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. \nPhoto caption:  StoryWalk®Signs along the Homestead Trail on Sears Island.

SUMMARY:Sears Island Fungal Project: The Importance of Collection and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island invites you to attend a Zoom presentation titled “Sears Island Fungal Project: The Importance of Collection and Conservation\,” on Thursday\, November 6\, at 6:30 pm. Fungi are shockingly understudied – while an estimated 80-90% of all plant species have been described by science\, of the estimated 2- 4 million fungal species\, only about 5% have been named formally. Join mycologist Jula Moll-Rocek for a discussion of the importance of fungal conservation and collections and an overview of the fungi that they collected (along with collaborators Jae Echeverria and Pete Avis PhD) during the summer and fall of 2024 on Sears Island. \nJula Moll-Rocek has a BA in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University (’12)\, and has experience working in the fields of nature conservation and restoration in areas of Latin America and East Africa. Most recently they were working as a curatorial assistant at the Farlow Herbarium of Cryptogamic Botany at Harvard University in Prof. Don Pfister’s lab. They love to learn and teach about fungi\, and are currently organizing a Community Mycology Collective in the Boston area. \nTo register and receive a link to this free Zoom presentation\, email outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org.

SUMMARY:All are invited to our Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Sears Island board of directors and advisory group—and your friends and neighbors—as we look back at the highlights of 2025 and learn about plans for the coming years. This is your chance to ask questions and get answers. It’s also an opportunity for you to think about becoming more involved. We have many important tasks for volunteers who can give a little time or a lot. \nPassing the Torch: At this meeting\, we will also bid a very grateful farewell to longtime board president Susan White. Susan has been on FOSI’s leadership team for 15 years\, including 12 as president. She’s decided it’s time for her to pull back and really retire. Susan’s contributions over so many years can’t be easily listed\, and her wise\, intelligent\, and patient leadership will be missed by all who’ve had the good fortune to work with her. There will be a chance for anyone to share memories! \nWe will gather next Saturday\, January 10\, at 12:30 pm at Mermaid Plaza\, located at 1 East Main St. in Searsport—it’s the building with the bright blue roof! We’d love to see you there! \nPS – We are expecting excellent weather\, but it is winter and this is Maine. If it becomes necessary to postpone due to weather\, we will plan to gather the following Saturday\, January 17th\, same time and place. We’ll send out an email and post on our Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Interpretive Walk
DESCRIPTION:We’ve installed a “Winter Mindfulness Walk” on the display boards along the Homestead Trail. Now that it’s late winter\, many of us are starting to feel a bit cooped up and could probably use some fresh air and a change of scenery\, so we hope you will visit the island for this peaceful interpretive walk. \nThis self-guided walk begins at the sign next to the kiosk\, and continues along the Homestead Trail until you reach the milkweed field and old house foundation\, covering approximately a half mile. The signs along the way include inspirational poems and quotes\, simple activities and techniques to stay in the moment\, information about the benefits of walking in the forest\, and meditations on the lessons we can draw from nature about surviving the harsh seasons of life. The Winter Mindfulness Walk will be installed through the end of March.

SUMMARY:Backyard Birding Activity Kits
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Sears Island has created free “Backyard Birding” themed activity kits for kids that will be available for families to pick up at Carver Memorial Library beginning Saturday\, March 7. Late winter is a great time to put out a bird feeder and observe what feathered friends come to your backyard. The birds that overwinter are desperate for food\, and soon migratory birds will return!  Each activity kit will include a wooden craft set for building a simple bird feeder\, birdseed\, and a blank journal where your child can record the birds that visit and note their behaviors. Handouts will feature information about common backyard bird species that winter in Maine\, along with journal prompts and templates\, and a list of other nature exploration activities to try in late winter. \nThe kits are intended for children ages 5-12. Donations to Friends of Sears Island are always gratefully accepted to allow the organization to continue to offer programming to all at no cost. Activity kit quantities are limited and will be distributed to families on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nPre-registration is no longer required to receive a kit- simply stop by Carver Memorial Library in Searsport when they are open (beginning March 7) and request a kit for your child while supplies last! \nFriends of Sears Island’s children’s programs and activity kits are sponsored by First National Bank.

SUMMARY:Cabin Fever Reliever: Community Crafting Event
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 15\, from 1:30-3:30 pm Friends of Sears Island will host an all ages community crafting program. Here’s a great chance to get out of the house and have a change of scenery while gathering with others to create a variety of fun projects! The program will be held at Mermaid Plaza at 1 East Main Street in Searsport. Friends of Sears Island will have several crafting stations set up\, where participants can make decoupaged shell trinket dishes\, springy cherry blossom and forsythia branch decorations\, a mini toadstool and moss craft\, felted friendship bracelets\, button trees\, and decorate rocks for your garden. Participants will have approximately 20 minutes at each station\, allowing the option to make all the projects if desired. Spend the afternoon visiting with friends and neighbors and create some cheery items to brighten your home while we wait for spring! \nThis program is for all ages\, young and old and in between\, but children must attend with an accompanying adult. To help defray materials costs\, we are suggesting a $5 donation per person\, or $10 per family. If you plan to attend\, please RSVP to outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org so that we can anticipate the quantity of materials we will need to have on hand. This also allows us to be in touch with you to remind you of the event and to share updates. Participants should wear old clothes or bring an apron or painting smock.

SUMMARY:Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 6\, at 6:30pm Friends of Sears Island will host a Zoom presentation given by Ron Butler about the butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. This presentation will cover the taxonomy\, evolution\, morphology\, and ecological significance of butterflies. It will include images of some representative species of the region’s six butterfly families\, explore butterfly conservation issues (particularly climate change)\, and briefly consider the ‘insect apocalypse’. The presentation will conclude with some recommended butterfly identification guides\, apps\, and websites. \nRon Butler is an animal ecologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Maine at Farmington\, where he taught courses in Zoology\, Entomology\, Ecology\, and Conservation Biology. While Ron spent the first part of his career conducting research with seabirds in Maine\, Newfoundland\, and Antarctica\, for the past several decades his work has focused on ecologically important groups of insects in Maine.  Ron helped plan and coordinate several state-wide citizen science initiatives\, including the Maine Damselfly and Dragonfly Survey\, the Maine Butterfly Survey\, the Maine Bumble Bee Atlas\, and (presently) the Maine Flower Fly Survey.  Ron co-authored Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces  (2023) and Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces (in press). \nPlease visit https://tinyurl.com/butterflies-of-maine to sign up.
