SUMMARY:Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 6\, at 6:30pm Friends of Sears Island will host a Zoom presentation given by Ron Butler about the butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. This presentation will cover the taxonomy\, evolution\, morphology\, and ecological significance of butterflies. It will include images of some representative species of the region’s six butterfly families\, explore butterfly conservation issues (particularly climate change)\, and briefly consider the ‘insect apocalypse’. The presentation will conclude with some recommended butterfly identification guides\, apps\, and websites. \nRon Butler is an animal ecologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Maine at Farmington\, where he taught courses in Zoology\, Entomology\, Ecology\, and Conservation Biology. While Ron spent the first part of his career conducting research with seabirds in Maine\, Newfoundland\, and Antarctica\, for the past several decades his work has focused on ecologically important groups of insects in Maine.  Ron helped plan and coordinate several state-wide citizen science initiatives\, including the Maine Damselfly and Dragonfly Survey\, the Maine Butterfly Survey\, the Maine Bumble Bee Atlas\, and (presently) the Maine Flower Fly Survey.  Ron co-authored Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces  (2023) and Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces (in press). \nPlease visit https://tinyurl.com/butterflies-of-maine to sign up. Registered participants will receive a link to the Zoom prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Summer Nature Journaling Workshop with Andrea Lani
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine Master Naturalist Andrea Lani in an exploration of Sears Island through nature journaling on Tuesday\, July 14\, from 9:30am- noon (rain date July 15). We’ll begin the morning by learning a few drawing and observation basics\, then we’ll investigate the tall oaks\, stone walls\, meadows\, and shoreline along the Homestead Trail. As we go\, we’ll pause to appreciate\, sketch\, and write about whatever captures our attention. Andrea will invite participants to try out a range of art\, writing\, and observation exercises\, which you will be able to bring home and apply to your own nature journaling practice. \nRegistration is required for this free event\, as space is limited. Please sign up at https://tinyurl.com/sears-island-nature-journaling. \nNo art\, writing\, or natural history experience is necessary. Please bring a blank notebook/journal or paper and a clipboard as well as your preferred drawing and writing implements. Andrea will provide some additional supplies\, such as colored pencils and art pens. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing suited to the weather\, and bring a hat\, sunblock\, bug spray\, snacks\, water\, or whatever else you need to feel comfortable for a few hours outdoors. A portable camp stool or sit pad for sitting or kneeling on the ground would be handy too. \nAndrea Lani writes about the intersection of family and the natural world from her home in Maine. She’s the author of Uphill Both Ways: Hiking toward Happiness on the Colorado Trail\, and her essays have recently appeared in Spire: The Maine Journal of Conservation and Sustainability and the anthologies Echos in the Fog and More than Hope. She’s also a regular contributor to Green & Healthy Maine magazine. Andrea is a graduate of College of the Atlantic and the Stonecoast MFA Program\, she’s a Maine Master Naturalist\, and she teaches nature writing and nature journaling workshops around Maine.
